2010 – The Year of the Insider Threat
February 23, 2010
Katie Weaver, Awareity

A recent report from CA warned that employees will continue to represent the biggest threat to security in 2010.

“Businesses are at threat from all angles. Not only are they susceptible to external and internal scams, data losses and theft, they are at risk every time their employees use search engines, email and social networking sites at work." - Joseph Souren, vice president for CA's Internet Security Business unit.

As we learned earlier this year, the average total per-incident costs for a data breach in 2009 were $6.75 million.  We have also learned that internal threats from employees have increased as economic conditions have weakened.

Most organizations I know cannot afford these expensive and embarrassing costs.   Can yours?

As we continue to study lessons learned, we continue to find that employers and managers must empower their employees to become the strongest link in their security efforts, rather than the weakest. Empowering employees requires proactively implementing processes and policies with all appropriate employees using stories and examples that people can relate too…no megaphone e-mail blasts or once-a-year training efforts have worked up to this point and organized crime continues to prey on those organizations that have not adjusted their programs and efforts.

How is your organization ensuring all individuals (employees, management, vendors, third-parties) understand their roles and responsibilities for protecting organizational data?
