Management Innovations and Transformations
January 15, 2010
By Rick Shaw, CEO and President of Awareity

Achieving superior performance and better results in a rapidly changing global economy requires innovations and transformations in management.

Global risks are escalating and a more interconnected global economy reveals escalating needs for more integrated and systemic management solutions. Lessons learned continue to show that even though global risks and our global economy are more interconnected, management methodologies are still disconnected silo implementations utilizing legacy management tools.

Whether organizations are dealing with a fiscal crisis, political challenges, terrorism, corporate espionage, cyber-attacks, natural disasters, man-made disasters, fines, lawsuits or other dangerous trends, systemic failures have led to numerous embarrassing and expensive incidents.

Better results depend on management innovations and transformations to ensure superior performance and more effectively and more efficiently connecting-the-dots.

Connecting-the-dots however is very difficult and complex when “dots” – people, strategies, technologies, regulations, business processes, plans, priorities, risks, threats, liabilities, obligations, audits, accreditations, alliances, insurance providers, first responders, and others – are constantly and rapidly changing. To make matters even worse, budgets are flat or being cut and resources are limited and legacy management methods are ineffective and inefficient, creating a Killer Gap.

In 2010 and beyond, management and organizational leaders will face even more challenges as escalating regulations, costs, risks, obligations, liabilities and dangerous trends will overwhelm traditional and legacy management methodologies.

Educators, industry leaders and government officials must understand new innovations in management and the transformation to e-Management. Just as e-Banking, e-Business, e-Collaboration and e-Mail have delivered faster, easier, more efficient, more cost-effective and more innovative solutions, leaders will need to focus on ways to replace legacy management methodologies with e-Management solutions.

Stakeholders must focus on management innovations and transformations to deliver more holistic and systemic ways to connect-the-dots and connect current management silos/departments – Risk, Employment, Compliance, Audit, Emergency, Business Continuity, Crisis, Information, Legal, Sales, Operations, Reputation and others – to mitigate systemic weaknesses and failures.

Managers cannot manage what they cannot measure, so to accomplish management interconnectivity and measurability, traditional management methodologies based on broadcasting information – binders, e-mails, intranets, once-a-year general training, shared drives and memos – will need to be replaced or complemented with better more effective management solutions.

Achieving better results and improving productivity depends on better decision-making which depends on managers having the right tools to get the right information to the right people in the right place at the right time with accountability and audit-ready documentation.
