Legacy E-mail Systems Are Not Secure

Although e-mail is the most popular application on the Internet, few people realize the full extent of their exposure to risk from unsecured operations. Recent efforts to offer “secure access” via SSL should not be confused with secure e-mail. Why? Because SSL provides no protection to e-mail that is sent out. As each e-mail is sent, it traverses the Internet, making several stops at ISPs and routing points, leaving behind copies of itself. Also, since most e-mail is unencrypted, these copies are easy to intercept and read.
