Labeling media is prescribed by more than one authority document. Any media that can hold sensitive information must be protected with extra precautions. And as the saying goes, out of site, out of mind. Below is a live chart from our survey on media labeling practices in your organizations (if you want to take the survey, we'll give you instructions at the end of this article). We asked about labeling everything that was covered in one of the authority documents for special destruction rules -- everything from Flash and USB drives through PDAs and laptops. What we found was more than just interesting. ![]() What scares us is the number of people who said "yes, we know we should label media according to the rules, but we just don't do it." Wow. What we also find interesting is the number of organizations that are taking that wishy-washy approach to wiping the data appropriately before disposing of it. A very large chunk of the respondents (which, funny enough, correlates to the same folks who said that they should be labeling but don't) said that maybe if they did label properly, they'd dispose properly. If you are wondering why we don't dispose of media properly, I think we've found the answer -- folks don't set themselves any visual reminders that they need to do so. And therefore, out of site out of mind seems to be the rule of hand. If you'd like to weigh in on the subject, you can take the survey HERE. |
